In the dynamic world of property brokerage, we encounter people with a wide variety of backgrounds, life stories and identities every day.
Our job as estate agents is to treat each individual customer with respect and empathy and to understand their individual needs. Whether male, female or diverse - each person has their own ideas and requirements for the perfect home.
In this issue of our newsletter, we would like to share a special anecdote from our everyday life that shows how important diversity is in the property industry. Experience a viewing with us that was made unforgettable not only by the special features of the property, but also by the unique composition of the prospective buyers.
I had organised a viewing for a charming old flat in Vienna. Three interested parties came forward: a young male couple, a single businesswoman and a person who did not clearly identify as male or female. Even the preparation for this appointment was special, as I wanted to make sure that everyone felt welcome and comfortable.
When the tour date arrived, I welcomed the three groups and started the tour.
The couple were impressed by the high ceilings and the large windows, the businesswoman was particularly interested in the modern kitchen and the third person asked about the options for organising the space flexibly.
During the viewing it turned out that all interested parties had different but equally important needs and wishes:
The couple were looking for a cosy home for their future, the businesswoman for a place to retreat to after long working days and the third person for a place that offered space for personal development.
After the tour, we all got talking and shared experiences from our lives and work. It was fascinating to see and hear how different the perspectives were and yet how similar the basic needs were - namely to find a place that offers security, comfort and opportunities for personal development.
In the end, the couple decided in favour of the flat. But what I remember most was the realisation that our job is not just about selling or renting out properties. It's about understanding and respecting people's different lifestyles and needs. Diversity is not just a concept in the property industry, it is a lived practice.
This experience has taught me how important it is to be open and flexible in order to cater to everyone's interests. Because each and every one of us deserves a place to call home - regardless of gender or identity.
