Chicken keeping is becoming increasingly popular in the private sector. Not only do chickens lay fresh eggs almost every day, they are also very entertaining.
Before I moved to the countryside 10 years ago, I had nothing to do with chickens. However, this changed when some of my customers, who live on a farm in Burgenland, bought a flat in Vienna through me. We became friends and after the purchase was finalised, they brought me 3 chickens.
The start as a chicken mum was born! Since then, I've let nothing come over my chickens.
As soon as I drive up to the garage, I am greeted with a friendly clucking and when they hear my voice, all 4 chickens come running towards me excitedly, especially as they are expecting treats again.
Chickens are the purest waste swallowers - they eat almost everything and an organic waste bag is no longer necessary.
Not all chickens are the same - each has its own character and I currently have 4 different hens, the typical brown hen, in my opinion the best laying hens, a black and brown hoax, a green layer, a grey hen that lays green eggs and a king percher, also a beautiful grey hen.
My neighbour has bantam chickens, cute little feathered animals that even cheep in a completely different way and are real cuddly creatures. On the other hand, they have the disadvantage that they often like to "sham" brood, which is not entirely safe for the animals, especially as they completely forget to eat and drink and it has often happened that hens die if you don't put them in front of the food bowl all the time.
